What Does Dizziness Feel Like?

When I ask patients to describe their dizziness, many respond with, "It might sound crazy, but..."

Whatever you finish that sentence with is not crazy.

Dizziness is a common symptom, but it can be hard to describe. It’s something you feel but others can’t see.

Common Descriptions

Vertigo: A sensation of spinning or the environment moving

Lightheadedness: Feeling faint like you might pass out or feeling “floaty” in your head

Imbalance: Feeling unsteady on your feet, having difficulty walking, or feeling like you might fall

Other Common Descriptions:

  • "It feels like the floor is suddenly giving out from under me."

  • "I feel like I’m still moving even after I stop."

  • "My mind feels foggy - I just feel 'off'."

  • "I can’t seem to walk in a straight line."

  • "I feel off balance, like I’m going to fall."

  • "Reading is hard. I often re-read or don't understand."

  • "I feel really bad in stores & busy places."

We Treat All Types of Dizziness

At Dizzy-Free PT, we've seen all types of dizziness. Whether it comes out of nowhere, slowly builds over time, is short-lasting or constant, or makes you feel "off" while shopping, driving, reading, turning, or moving quickly, we've seen it all. Too many people spend years bouncing around in the medical system without answers or improvement.

One condition we're particularly passionate about is BPPV, also known as "positional vertigo" or "the crystals in your ears." BPPV is the most common cause of inner ear vertigo, affecting 1 in 42 people in their lifetime. Despite its prevalence, it's not well-known in the general public.

That's why I wrote a book on it. Amazon link coming soon!

Whether you're dealing with BPPV or another type of dizziness, we are here to help.

Get Back to Feeling Like You

Dizziness can turn your life upside down, but it doesn't have to stay that way.

"I have had four occasions when I worked with a physical therapist for balance. Carly provided the best support that I received. I showed real progress with both balance and stamina (per the ihealth app linked to my apple watch). She was able to provide me with useful things I could do at home to improve my health, things I continue to do to this day. Most importantly she was always truthfull, she had no problems telling me the hard truths that I might not want to hear but that I needed to hear. I give her a ★★★★★+ rating."

"Carly is an exceptional physical therapist. She listened attentively to my vertigo challenges and quickly developed an effective treatment plan. Her compassionate and professional approach made me feel comfortable and confident that the issue would be solved. Carly's genuine empathy and dedication to my wellbeing were evident through her consistent follow-ups and adjustments to my treatment. I highly recommend Carly to anyone in need of a skilled and caring PT. She made a significant difference in my health and quality of life."

“The morning before I had planned to drive to Michigan for my summer stay, I woke with vertigo after being dizzy-free for several months. I began doing the Epley maneuver and my eye exercises daily and as of two days ago, am back to normal…whatever normal is! You certainly gave me the tools to use. I am so grateful for the time I was able to spend with you in learning how to manage these strange episodes. Your gentle encouragement, exercise plan and your friendship through our weeks of working together are the best medicine.”
